Thai Quinoa Salad, from www.foodiecrush.com
One day, when I was 14 years old, I heard my mother screaming and ran to her bathroom. My father, doubled over, sweaty and pale, was complaining about chest pain and indigestion. I looked to my left - my kid sister was crying and and next to her was my little brother, quiet, and visibly shaken. My mother, afraid it was a heart attack, was distraught and in turn, I called 911. The paramedics came, they examined him, and they couldn’t find anything wrong. Some time passed and we learned his “heart attack” was a really bad case of gas. (Before sustainable farming was "In," we grew organic fruits and vegetables in our back yard and my father, excited about all the variety of cherries that grew in, had eaten too many.)
Here's a Thai Quinoa Salad Slideshow. Because everything's better when it's interactive.
We laugh about it now, but that moment was the first time I realized how calm I could be. (Surprising! I’m secretly hyperactive). My poor sister and brother were just kids. My dad (in howling pain) and I were really mellow but it made me wonder, “Why are some people mellow in a crisis and others freak out?” Brené Brown has a great answer to this in her podcast, “Unlocking Us”. It’s a wonderful explanation and my favorite part is how calmness and anxiety are both contagious.

Finally, since we ultimately can (try to) have a choice to be super mellow or hyperactive, check this out. (Btw, I’m definitely a dog person but my husband and daughter are cat people.)
